When using, always use fresh solder to keep the surface of the soldering iron bright. When re tinning the oxidized soldering iron head: Heat the soldering iron head enough to melt the old coating, clean the soldering iron head on a wet cellulose sponge that can be squeezed out of water, apply inorganic acid flux (which can be ammonium chloride) to remove residual rust, and then re tin with a rosin core soldering wire with increased tin content. A simple method for re tinning is to wrap the solder wire around the soldering iron head and then apply electricity to the soldering iron to melt the wire. Alternatively, if there is a soldering tin can, apply flux to the clean soldering iron head and immerse it in the molten tin in the can for re tinning. After tinning, remove any remaining solder.
Another method to remove the label on a soldering iron head that has cooled to room temperature is to use soldering iron head cleaning agent or fine sandpaper to wipe the soldering iron head until the surface resists clean gray iron (not copper), and then re tin it.
